Team result may surprise

The team competition is modeled on the Tour’s team competition, which is decided by combining the times of a team’s three highest placed riders in the overall classification. Last year’s Fantasy TdF showed that getting three riders across the line with good times was not at all the same thing as amassing points. The same is true this year with overall winner Two Phat 2 limping home in 27th place in the team competition, while wooden spooner Babel turned the table the other way, coming in 16th. But it was Stuey who leaped from the upper mid-table mediocrity of 11th place to take out the consistency award and its $30 prize. I’ve added a table to the Fantasy TdF page showing all the team times. It’s interesting to note that in this case the real thing beats a fantasy, with Team CSC’s 263:29:57 putting them more than an hour ahead of Stuey’s lineup.

That’s it for this year’s Fantasy TdF. Thanks to all the players for making it such an interesting competition. We hope we haven’t broken up too many homes as a result. Next year if we get our act together we might run a non-random competition instead of or as well as this year’s no-brainer format.

Two Phat too strong

In a tight finish worthy of the Champs Élysées, and despite the enormous risk of entering the Fantasy Tour de France without a genuine overall contender, Two Phat 2 has hung onto top spot after the allocation of yellow jersey points. While Two Phat 2 failed to score a single point from the top 20 GC riders, the result is all the more incredible as the final reckoning sees six teams sandwiched between 1100 and 1200 points.

Fantasy TdF top five (final)
Rank Player Score Prize
1 Two Phat 2 1198 $100
2 Little Mig 1171 $60
3 FatBoy 1164 $40
4 Paddles 1157 $20
5 Blinder 1127 $10

At the other end of the table Spunker faltered at the last hurdle, scoring 28 points for Amaël Moinard’s fifteenth overall. I guess with no previous starts in the Tour and 74th in this year’s Paris-Nice young Amaël seemed like a safe enough pick. This allowed Flirty O’Dirty to sneak back into the wooden spoon money - a suitable way to salvage her reputation after last year’s controversy.

Fantasy TdF bottom three (final)
Rank Player Score Prize
34 Flirty O’Dirty 200 $10
35 Ribs 172 $10
36 Babel 102 $20

All that remains now is the team prize, which I’ll do in another post…

Leaders go green

Fantasy TdF leaders Two Phat 2 and Goanna have shown their strength in the sprint for the line by scoring well in the green jersey competition. Early leader Zippy, so sorely cheated at the first rest day by Sicknote’s team of drug fiends has slipped further out of the money, while Little Mig and Dangerous Dave have made late moves thanks to Oscar Freire. It’s hard to believe a rider with his consistency and all-round strength has never before won the maillot vert. No movement in the wooden spoon competition with the bottom five all resolutely out of the points.

Leaders miss out on spotty points

First up another hearty thanks to O’Dirty for keeping the Fantasy TdF on the rails for the last three weeks. It’s a big job watching every stage so you can provide some kind of post the next day, not to mention updating the scores, and on top of that the Two Phats had to add the challenge of a daily word to be worked into the post. So, weary from his daily battle, he has handed me the responsibility of doing the tallies for the jerseys and working out the teams competition winner. It might take a day or two to get to the final result, so bear with me.

Recent Tour de France tradition seems to be that the polka-dot jersey is fought out by opportunists who chase down the points in breakaways and the pure climbers who fight out the big mountain stages. So while the overall race leaders must do well in the mountains, it’s been a while since the yellow/polka-dot jersey double was achieved. The same seems to be true for the Fanatasy TdF, where the competition leaders have failed to score big points from the spotty shirt.

Fatboy is the big mover thanks to Bernhard Kohl, leaping from ninth to third, while Blinder slips to sixth by failing to score for the first time in an allocation of points. No doubt he was relying on his main man Evans to make the top fifteen in this contest, but if that were the case… At the other end of the table there is some movement, with Spunker and Ribs mounting rearguard actions for the wooden spoon cash. Digger must now relinquish all hope as his 200-point haul from Kohl only cements his middle-table mediocrity.
